San Francisco in the 1900s

San Francisco is an absolutely beautiful city full of beautiful people, views and infrastructures. From the famous, curvy Lombard Street to the picturesque and world-renowned Golden Gate Bridge, the city is boasting with historical monuments and landscapes.

While the city itself isn’t very old compared to the rest of the country, the city holds a lot of rich history that is still apparent as you walk around its streets today. Many of the buildings, bridges and streets that makeup the rich history of San Francisco were built in the late 19th century and early 20th century, allowing their style to have a certain beauty and almost modern feel no matter the time.

But also due to this timing of when much of San Francisco was officially being established, a lot of it was destroyed or damaged in the infamous earthquake of 1906. As seen below in an image of Post and Grant Avenue, the earthquake was devastating for most of the city.

Not only did the earthquake dismantle much of the infrastructures around the city, but the fire that raged on afterwards burned anything and everything in its path as well. As seen in the image below which depicts the Mission District, much of the city went up in smoke and actually burned down many buildings that survived the initial earthquake.

But while the city was destroyed, the spirit and eagerness to continue on was thriving more than ever. Shortly after, San Francisco slowly but surely began to rebuild and re-establish itself as one of the greatest cities in the United States.

Many of the famous structures that San Francisco is now famous for were built after the 1906 earthquake and in some ways, in response to the devastating earthquake. Lombard Street was built in 1922 and the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937, suggesting new ideas were brought to life after great despair.

People travel from all around the world to gaze upon the beauty bestowed throughout the entire city through its stunning infrastructures built upon stunning landscapes and views. San Francisco is an iconic city full of iconic bridges, buildings and streets. It is continuously referenced and pictured in movies and television shows all around the world, and it all began with its construction in the early 1900s.

Modern day San Francisco is just as glorious as it was in the 20th century, partly because much of what made it great then, still makes it great today. San Francisco is a city rich in history, just walk around the city and you’ll see exactly what I am talking about.
