Lauren Beukes

Lauren Beukes Lauren Beukes is the author of the gritty magic-infested noir, Zoo City, set in Johannesburg's inner city slums and Moxyland, a neo-apartheid future thriller. She's a South African author, TV scriptwriter, documentary filmmaker and a recovering journalist who still sometimes falls off the wagon, especially if she can tie in an interesting investigative feature to her novel research. She lives in Cape Town with her husband and daughter.

Zoo City was short-listed for the Arthur C Clarke Award and the BSFA Award and won the Kitschies Red Tentacle for the novel that best "elevates the tone of geek culture." It’s an unconventional detective story about email scammer, Zinzi, who has a sloth on her back and the magical ability to find lost things, set against the backdrop of the aposymbiot plague. It’s a story about the things we do to each other, crime, slums, refugees, magic and music and the possibility of redemption
